Singer-songwriter Noel isn’t your typical 21-year-old. The Swedish pop sensation started making music in his bedroom, and since then has gathered over 10 million views on TikTok through his extraordinary covers. Ahead of his new single ‘Without Calling’, Noel shared his unique story with INJECTION.
I'm a very “all or nothing” type of person and until I was 17 the only thing I really cared about was football. That was until an injury forced me to quit, so I picked up music instead. Ever since then, I’ve been totally obsessed with singing, writing, and trying to learn instruments. I just love how complicated music can be but also how simple it is, and that really fascinates me.
I have a broad taste when it comes to music and love listening to all kinds of different genres, which means I also love creating different types of music. I strongly believe in freedom when writing and creating whatever comes to you that day. I want to write music that can fill you with energy but also songs that you can cry to.
I feel very proud and happy about the release of my first EP, because so much work went into it and, in many ways, it was my introduction to songwriting and making my own music. I started writing for this EP without ever having written a song before and it was a lot of learning by doing. I am so proud of it and it will always have a special place in my heart but at the same time, it also felt good to be able to close that chapter and move on with my writing.
One challenge with songwriting is that it's such an uneven curve, you don't consistently get better. You have a lot of ups and downs and only when looking back over a longer period, can you see the improvement. The difficult part is not letting the “rough periods” get to your confidence. What works for me is to just keep going and eventually you’ll find your groove again.
I have to force myself to be creative. I wish I could find creativity in my everyday life and that it would come to me naturally but most of the time it doesn’t. I have to actively sit down and try to force myself to think of different ideas and concepts and have to organise and structure my creativity. I have a document that I've used for over three years, where I write down every idea that I’ve ever had.
What inspires me the most is hearing and seeing other people who are really gifted. My biggest inspiration for getting into music was discovering Lewis Capaldi and just being amazed by his voice. I was fascinated by the way he sang and I started by practising his songs on the piano and singing to them. My aspiration for my music is to inspire people, and if at least one person wants to create music because of me, then that’s all I could ever ask for.
